On June 18th 2005, we will embark on our second Overland Ambulance Donation Expedition in order to improve health-care access for people in developing regions of the world. Without the assistance of traditional aid organisations and by doing everything on our own, the expedition team will this year drive from Sweden to Morocco in order to donate two ambulances loaded with medical supplies to two separate destinations in need.
Background
Britta Dancy have recently founded a hospital in Abeinou, West Sahara, Morocco. She is a Swedish woman now 88 years old who has spent the last 35 years in Morocco. Britta Dancy has been featured in a large number of TV programs and other print-media articles world-wide describing her aid work in this impoverished region. Her outstanding enthusiasm for the people of Abeinou has been recognized by Kjell Borneland and Tina Höijer at Swed-Asia Travels for a long time who have now found an opportunity to help.
Through Stockholm Health Care and Dr Margareta Linden we have now recieved two second hand ambulances.
Kjell Borneland and Tina Höijer (Swed-Asia Travels), professor Hamadi Bekouchi and Ahmed Hamduchi (Morocco Polo Travels) have founded a new organisation called Solidarity Morocco - Sweden which purpose is to donate the two ambulances and improve health-care access for people in developing regions of the world.
The Expedition
On June 18th we will start driving the 5000 km from Strängnäs through Germany, France and Spain to Morocco and the final destinations Abeinou and Fez.
Ten volunteers, two ambulances and one Jeep (for safety reasons) are involved in the 2005 Expedition. There is one medical doctor and one nurse on the expedition team. The project is completely non-profitable, and most of the expenses are paid by the members of the expedition team themselves.
Firstly, one ambulance will be donated to the aid organisation Al Ofoq, which is located outside the city of Fez. The ambulance will serve the local people in the area that presently have no access to emergency care or transportion to hospitals in Fez.
Secondly, the other ambulance will be donated to "Britta´s" small hospital in Abeinou.
The hospital is still nothing but a building, and it, therefore, needs all the medical supplies it can get. Consequently, we kindly ask for your help. Financial support and medical supplies are the most important things needed to start up a hospital, but any type of relevant sponsorship is warmly welcomed. Our suggestion is to name the hospital, Britta Hospital.
If you can help, don´t hesitate to contact us for further information. Please see Contact.
Sincerely yours,
The Expedition Team
